Comments: Being from Memphis people always ask me about Elvis. While I never saw him in concert he always attended the WFL games. He would always be introduced by the pa announcer and would lean out of the press box and wave to the crowd. He really loved football.

Comments: The World Football League was mentioned in the January 2, 2000 New York Times in a roundup of failed 20th century professional sports leagues. Here is what was written about the WFL:

World Football League, 1974-75
The Memphis Southmen had a grizzly bear cub as their mascot. During one game, the cub playfully chewed through the insulation of a wire lying on the ground; when he got to the core he gave himself a terrific shock that threw him over on his back and shorted out the stadium scoreboard for 10 minutes.

The week before the 1975 season finale, the Hawaiians, who played in Honolulu, asked their players to take pay cuts to save the franchise. Both quarterbacks refused and quit. Two days before the game, the team recruited two replacements: Milt Holt, who had played at Harvard, and Jim Fassel, who had been a player-coach for the Hawaiians in their first year. Holt was taken from a desk job at Honolulu City Hall, and Fassel, now the head coach of the Giants, had been driving a truck in Los Angeles. The Hawaiians lost to the Southern California Sun, 26-7.

I posted the preceeding to the World Football League mailing list. I hope more visitors to this site will sign up for it. Just go to onelist.com, search for World Football League and sign up.

Comments: I have just e-mailed the Los Angeles Times obituary and a column on Tom Fears, the Pro Football Hall of Fame member who was the Southern California Sun's head coach, to the World Football League mailing list. Both mention the Sun.

You can join the list by going the www.onelist.com. Both stories should be part of the list archive at that site.

Comments: I've always been interested in both the WFL and the USFL. I'm the host of a radio sports call-in show in Chattanooga and have used both the WFL and USFL in trivia questions. It is a shame that so many people have forgotten about the WFL. Many people will hear "WFL" and they think about NFL Europe. I still believe that an alternative professionl football league can be successful in the United States. Cities such as Birmingham, Memphis, Orlando, San Antonio and Portland could support football on a smaller scale. If a city could just average around 30,000 in attendance, then a WFL or a USFL league could gain some credibility and a league with conservative owners would be a success. Great site. I really like the uniforms and helmets.

Comments: What was the date of the Hawaiians at Southern California Sun 1974 World Football League playoff game? Its 25th anniversary either just passed or is coming up. I remember exactly where I was when I listened to its fourth quarter--my bathtub.

I think that was a sign of the greatness of the World Football League and the early-to-mid 1970s. I doubt I would remember for 25 years where I listened to a current National Football League game.

A mistake Sun announcer Tom Harmon (the 1940 Heisman Trophy winner) made helps me remember where I was. With just a few minutes left and The Hawaiians assured of victory he said, "If The Hawaiians win, they'll stay in the United States and play in Birmingham next week."

I was shocked because I knew there was no way the Sun could come overcome a 32-14 deficit. However, I was more shocked Harmon did not know Hawaii was part of the United States and had been so since the late 19th century.

One play when by and Harmon's color commentator, Marlin McKeever, said, "Tom, what you meant was that The Hawaiians will stay in the continental United States. Hawaii is part of the United States."

Also, what was the date of the World Bowl?

My final question is, "Where are you now King Corcoran?" in reference to the Philadelphia Bell quarterback. I will elaborate on that in my next posting. It is time for me to prepare to head to the Tennessee-UCLA women's basketball which I will be covering for The Associated Press. I doubt it will be as memorable as the Hawaiians-Sun playoff game but this is where the differences between being a reporter and fan and being 38 and 13 figure in.

(Ironically, the same reporter who covered the Sun for the Los Angeles Times, Earl Gustkey, may well be at the Tennessee-UCLA game because he is now The Times women's basketball reporter.)

Thanks,

Steven Herbert

P. S. Please feel free to post responses to create greater feedback, but also e-mail me your responses because I do not check in here much.

P. P. S. I apologize for this appearing as one long copy block. I do not think there is an alternative to this.

Comments: I have been a fan of the WFL since it began. I attended all the Memphis Southmen's home games and have newspaper articles on all the games and the end of the league. I even have the news ticker copy from the local radio station when the league ended. I made banners, shot home movies of the games and have a WFL football autographed by Czonka, Kickk and Warfield that I am very proud of. I would be glad to talk to any fans who remember the league as the alternative to the NFL and how many young men got to play professional football in the smaller TV markets.

Comments: My sons, Evan and Ian, and I were surfing through ebay and found your site. I was a season ticket holder and attended all the Memphis Southmen home football games. I have a WFL football autographed by the team after Czonka, Kickk, and Warfield arrived in Memphis. I have ticket stubs and programs from nearly all the home games. I was a big fan and enjoyed all the games. I have banners and some home movies of some day games. I would be glad to talk with others about the WFL and those days of pro football in the smaller TV markets.

Comments: Very Enjoyable site. I was a big fan of the WFL back in 1974 and 1975. I still have a letter from the Commisioner's office previewing the upcoming season for 1975. I also have quite a file of old news clippings from both seasons. If they could be of any research value please let me know, Thanks.

Comments: the wfl was an interesting league and thanks to tvs, eddie einhorn's sports network, got coverage for its first year. but gosh, eddie withdrew support the next year and the wfl languished without decent media coverage, and eddie's tvs and a major network hooked up to televise roundball. it just so happened that the major network had an nfl schedule to televise. the wfl didn't even try to go head-to-head with the nfl but the nfl saw fit to choke any competition and bore us to death with their relatively conservation play. they even chose to expand into seattle and tampa with ragtag teams rather than take the americans or memphis from the wfl - evidently, the nfl did not want any teams that would be immediately competitive. parity was, and is, just a word. someday i may tell you how i really feel...
