Just saw an NFL Films piece on the WFL shown on Classic Sports Network.
I remember the colored pants fiasco attempted by the WFL to show the fans
the position players. Pastel colors with vertical stripes. Large colored
stars for the quaterbacks. Some of the players were embarrassed to wear
them. Thank goodness the league never used them.
Thank you for the site. Sometimes it seems that I am the only person who
remembers the league. |

Brings back memories. I remember watching WFL games, I believe, on the
syndicated "TVS" sports television network. As I recall, they were shown
on our local Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania NBC affiliate. The Fire, the Wheels,
the Americans and the Bell, among others! Czonka, Kick and Warfield! It
was real football. I'm convinced that if properly organized and managed,
a professional Spring/Summer league can be successful. People are football
starved a month after the Super Bowl and this would fill the void. The point
isn't to compete with the NFL, it's to offer REAL outdoor football, in the
U.S., with skilled players. There are more than enough college and former
pro players, referees, coaches, broadcasters, etc., who would get on board.
Build it right and the fans will come and the fans will come back. No nonsense---we
don't need another XFL---just REAL football, with most of the NFL rules
in place and maybe just a few experiments. Good old fashioned uniforms,
not glitzy garbage. Hard nosed players. It will work! |

I was the Secretary to the Chicago Fire coaching staff. It was such
fun to be associated with them. I often wonder what happened to Jim Spavitol
(head coach) and the rest of the coaches. |

My name is ken Robinson, founder of InterNATIONAL FOOTBALL SCOUTING. I work
with several NFL/CFL agents most of whom are full time attorneys. I handle
all the scouting, marketing, research & consultation with pro teams &
players for them.Me and some collegues have for years kicked around the
idea of bringing back the old USFL and implementing the original plan: $20-$50K
salary cap, non compete with NFL(hope to eventually have a 32 team minor
league feeder system with NFL) like a AAA or AA MLB team, cable contract
with USA or Comcast, play in spring up until NFL training camp. There needs
to be a viable outdoor football option for the fans.If we avg even 10 k(USFL
avg 24k) fans/gm @ $20/ticket=$200k per home game X 8 home games = 1.6m
+ 1/2 road gate = 800 k = 2.4 mil. Salary avg 35k x 40 roster=1.4 mil, not
to mention concessions & parking +TV( which we feel confident one of
the cable networks would do to sell advertising) We just wanted to put out
some feelers to see who would be interested in helping to put some of the
plan in place.Call 480-545-1256 or email me if you are interested or even
just to chat about the old USFL days.

Hi There: Great to discover this site. I remember the WFL very well.
I have all home game programs of the short lived New York Stars. I had hoped
the WFL would be as successful as the AFL, but things didn't quite work
out that way. Best regards |

Hi! I was looking up information on the 1974 World Football League and
found this site. I have 3 sets of sticker sheets from the WFL and was wondering
who they were and if these stickers have any value. Please don't take this
as I am trying to sell them on your guest book, just wondering if they are
worth something, so I (or should I say more importantly my wife) does not
throw them away.
The sticker sheets depict 12 teams, with each sticker being 2" across. The
teams are :
Philadelphia Bell
Florida Blazers
Southern California Sun
Houston Texans
New York Stars
Memphis Southmen
Chicago Fire
Birmingham Americans
The Hawaiians
Jacksonville Sharks
Portland Storm
Detroit Wheels
Across the top of the sheet it says "run on a webtron 650- print '74 show
(then a W symbol) plates by graphinettes corp. glassmaster division". The
back of the sheets say " Mactac Morgan Adhesive Company 4560 Darrow Road,
Stow, Ohio"
I was just trying to find information to see if they were worth anything.
I got them when I was in high school in Toledo, Ohio. After searching around
the web, I think they might be a little rare as I could not find anything
about them. Thanks for the very cool site and historical information about
the WFL!

My husband is an avid fan of the WFL, a member of the PFRA, and has
a room in our house dedicated to the WFL. I even agree to watch ESPN Classics
with him. We especially get a kick out of the King Corcoran. Keep up the
good work with the website! |

It's nice to see someone keepin the legacy alive it was a short lived
life for the wfl but it impacted the way football was played from that point
on...and that is inmportant. |
