Woman Grid Announcer On Home Box Tonight

Another bastion of male dominance will fall tonight when Barbara Sheehan covers the Philadelphia Bell-Detroit Wheels World Football League game for Home Box Office, the pay TV network.

Barbara will pioneer as what is believed to be the first female network live action football telecaster when she teams with HBO's regular WFL play-by-play announcer, Spencer Ross, for the 8 p.m. game from John F. Kennedy stadium in Philadelphia.

She will be filling in for former pro grid star Gino Cappelletti, who usually is associated with Ross on Weekly WFL games Home Box Office carries to its approximately 23,000 subscribers in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

The TVS Sports Network's WFL Game of the Week actually had sportscaster, Jane Chastain, in the broadcast booth during their July 25, 1974 telecast of the contest between the New York Stars and Philadelphia Bell. Chastain was in the TV booth as a guest commentator, alongside Merle Harmon and Alex Hawkins. CBS Sports added Chastain on an NFL broadcast for a game on October 13, 1974.
